Environmental Studies

Building on the University of Oregon’s long tradition of environmental research and activism, our Environmental Studies program sets the standard in interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration with more than 100 participating faculty from thirty campus programs and departments. ENVS degree programs are flexible and tailored to meet specific educational and career goals, providing students with the opportunities to work alongside world-class scholars and researchers, develop concrete skills and analytical abilities, and gain hands-on experience relevant to careers in government agencies, non-governmental organizations, private industry, and academic fields.

Join UO Common Reading

For the second year in a row, the campus community is reading Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by author Robin Wall Kimmerer. All are welcome to join in, and students can access the e-book for free through UO Libraries. Kimmerer brings together her experience as a botanist and as a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation in a bestselling memoir that urges humans to reconnect with the rest of the living world.

Environmental Leaders ARC

This Academic Residential Community allows students to live and learn with peers who share their concern for the environment and social justice. They live together in the same hall while exploring sustainability through volunteering, events, and course work.

Student Sustainability Awards

Beginning in 2015, the University of Oregon launched the Campus Sustainability Awards program to recognize individuals whose contributions deepen our culture of sustainability across a range of institutional activities. We are proud to feature the outstanding nominees for the Student Leadership Awards sponsored by the Student Sustainability Center.

Environmental Leadership Program

The Environmental Leadership Program matches student teams with non-profit organizations, governmental agencies, and businesses to address local environmental needs.

Student Sustainability Center

The Student Sustainability Center (SSC) is a collaborative space for student-led initiatives that foster environmental justice, social well-being, and ecological resilience. The SSC empowers students to engage pressing sustainability issues through leadership development, campus programming, projects driven by student needs and interests, and sustainability-oriented community. Citizens' Climate Lobby, UO Chapter
Citizens' Climate Lobby is an international, nonpartisan, climate activist organization. The University of Oregon chapter (CCL@UO) spreads awareness about climate change, lobbies for meaningful climate policy, and empowers students to make a difference. 
Climate Justice League
The mission of the Climate Justice League is to empower students to organize their communities and be leaders in the climate justice movement by using direct-action campaigns. 
Coalition Against Environmental Racism
CAER has the dual mission of educating the campus about environmental racism and building coalitions within the University community to foster activism in the environmental justice movement. 
Communities for Minorities in STEM
CMiS at the University of Oregon was established to promote the participation and success of minorities in the STEM field. 
Design for America
Design for America is an interdisciplinary club using the human centered design process to address social issues in our community.
Ecological Design Center
The EDC seeks to educate and inspire University of Oregon design students to have the awareness, sensitivity, and expertise to lead the community toward sustainability. 
Envision Journalism
The University of Oregon's environmental student publication.
Greeks Go Green
Increasing the sustainability of the University of Oregon's Fraternity and Sorority Life through green events and more. 
Insurgent
The Student Insurgent is a radical publication that seeks to deconstruct the existing social order and facilitate its replacement with one which is ecologically sound and functions on egalitarian lines.
Journal of Environmental Law & Litigation
JELL provides a forum for discussing new ideas and contemporary topics in environmental and natural resources law, publishing this scholarship both in print and online to better inform practitioners, researchers, and law students, while also expanding knowledge within the field. 
Just Food Student Coalition
Just Food is a community within University of Oregon for anyone interested in food justice and wishing to engage, discuss, and participate in events surrounding the food system.
Land Air Water Society
Land Air Water Environmental Law Society is the nation’s oldest and largest student environmental law society. LAW’s first and foremost activity is organizing the annual Public Interest Environmental Law Conference.
LiveMove
LiveMove brings together undergraduate and graduate students from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines to focus on the planning and design of transportation systems as they relate to community quality of life and livability.
Net Impact Undergraduate Center
Net Impact combines aspects of student culture, work, and having a positive net impact. They do this through implementing sustainable business practices in hands-on projects, speaker series, site visits, networking trips, and collaborations with organizations both locally and worldwide. 
Oregon Student Public Interest Research Group
OSPIRG chapters provide the training, professional support and resources students need to tackle climate change, protect public health, revitalize our democracy, feed the hungry and more.
Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science
SACNAS at UO exists to create a supportive community of STEM students at the University of Oregon. Students of all backgrounds are welcome to join its community in support of this mission.
Radical Organizing and Activism Resource Center
ROAR Center, formerly Survival Center, is more than 40 years of environmental and social justice advocacy, and is a space and resource for student projects. 
Society for Ecological Restoration Student Association
UO SER is a collective of undergraduate and graduate students that strives to provide opportunities for experiential learning and community engagement and service focused on restoration ecology. 
Students for Indigenous Rights & Environmental Justice in Bolivia
SIREJ is a collection of UO students and faculty working in collaboration with Bolivian indigenous communities, both in person and remotely, to support indigenous rights and environmental justice.
Student Labor Action Project
At the intersection of the student movement and the labor movement, SLAP actively works to better the realities for workers on campus and in the greater community.
